Default 86 differential swap into a 99?

My 8.8 differential in my 99 mustang gt convertible has unfortunately gave up the ghost and I found one with 4.10 gears that I'm thinking about getting. Its out of a 86 gt and it has drums. My question is can I remove the drums and axles from the 86 housing and just install my axles and disc brakes from the 99 housing? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

The 99 axle is slightly wider than the older 86 gt. It will probly work,, but if it was me Id look into just swapping out the carrier and pinion. Depending on what all is wrong with yours.

The bearings went out in the rear of mine. It was redone with 3.73s before I bought it and I dont think it was setup properly. I haven't torn it apart yet to see the extent of the damage but it mainly sounds like bearing noise. I just found this complete rear with 4.10s for cheaper than I can rebuild my current one so i was trying to see if it would work

If you're looking for a no-BS nuts n' bolts swap then your only real option is to find a complete rear from a 99-04 car. '98 and earlier are about 1.5" less in overall width, and '93-earlier (Fox body) are a bit less in width than that.

The ring & pinion + diff out of that '86 rearend can definitely be used in yours if you wanted to rebuild your existing, not sure about anything else in that housing though.
