Default HELP!! Steering shaft hitting headers

i just put a new engine in my 00 gt. i went ahead and installed bbk tuned shorty headers on the new motor before i put it in the car. i re-used the old motor mount, and i just noticed today that the passenger side insert is missing the rivet. there isnt any rubbing when driving straight but when i accelerate into a right turn it sounds very bad. i think that this is causing the weight to shift to the other side. i put some shims under the side where the steering shaft is rubbing, almost fixed it, but there is still some contact in them. SO MY QUESTION IS can i fix this motor mount insert, and would it be safe to shim it some more until it stops hitting, or do i just have to replace the motor mounts??? Anyone done this at home? How hard is this to do?

i don't know if you can fix it or if you have to get a new one. but i don't see why shiming it a small amout would hurt anything.

Instead of band-aiding the problem, Fix it properly. You can buy a new motor mount and just put a jack on the motor to support it while you replace the mount. By shimming it (if it's moving as much as you say it is when cornering) you're going to do some serious damage to either the motor or steering shaft, or both. You took the time to put in a new engine, don't waste all that work by not properly fixing a stupid motor mount.

I would replace the mounts with polyurethane mounts. They last forever. Prothane makes some. You can go ebay or buy at stangsuspension.com.
