haha 350hp??? no chance of that

It all depends on how good of a manual driver you are...if you can shift well you will have a slight advantage, maybe even none with that shift kit

Hey guys, I had a quick question for you guys. I am not exactly sure how good the automatic tranny is in the Mustangs compared to the manual, but a kid at school here wants to race me. Im not planning on it for a while since the track is closed, but i was kind of curious which one would have the better odds? He has a 99 GT auto and i have a 00 GT Manual. Now i figured the manual had the advantage, but anyone can be found wrong. He has a "shift kit" for his tranny, which i realize can change when his transmission shifts and all that (the moron claims an hp increase). Aside from that, his car has some ram air thing and "a computer chip". (I ask who makes this stuff, what kind or what his settings are and he has no clue). He's claiming 350 hp. I thought this was kind of ludacris but like i said, I have a tendency to be wrong.

Thanks,
Ryan Willuweit

^^^^ If he has a shift kit it will be close but you should still win as long as you do not MISS A GEAR!!!!!

If you can verify that he DOES have a chip/programmer he might have a couple more (2-6) hp over what it is stock. There is now way in H*** that he has 350 HP with just thoes mods. It will be a really close race, almost too close to call, but I would think that you can edge him out by a little bit. Now go and race him and have fun!!!

Its really gonna be up to you. if you can drive then you shouldn't have a problem. if you can't well you have a problem.

I'm betting on the auto. Why do you suppose they have drag race classes that are NOT allowed to run autos???

No way 350HP with that stuff. You sure he doesnt' have a shot of nitrous to 'help' him reach that?

an above average driver should win with a stick. stick puts more power to the ground.
shift kit + programmer evens things out a little bit though. less chance for error with the stick. no way in hell he has 350 HP without a lot of $$ under the hood or s/c, turbo or nitrous.

You have to realize something, an auto has 3 speeds, your manual has 4 speeds, overdrive is not counted. A shift kit will bump up the line pressure, a chip will adjust shift points, but he is still limited to the stock launch RPM, if he goes above that RPM he will spin. You can expect him to shift at red line consistently and have very fast positive shifts. But you have the advantage, your power is hooked directly to the wheels and so you deliver more, and you have 1 more gear. You should rev to around 3000 RPM and dump clutch but keep RPM steady, the nose will go up and then down, when it goes down apply full power, shift into 2nd just before rev limiter, power shift into 3rd, and 4th. Use traction control for the launch, turn it off before shifting into 2nd.

Auto drivers usually talk trash. They are cocky because they have power readily available off the light, you on the other hand have to anticipate the light. This all changes under race conditions, you both will anticipate the start. Do not count the start from the car, this never works. Use a traffic light or a flagger on the road.
