5.0 vs 4.6
Was the old 5.0 225 hp much faster than the 1998 225 hp 4.6? Really it is not fair since the 98 was heavier than the fox. How much heavier? Was the fox really 3000lbs? our 4.6 are 3400+? I'd really like to see the two battle it out with a car of the same weight. On paper the power looks the same. The 4.6 has the advantage of the long stroke, but looses to the 5.0 big bore. In theory the 4.6 shoudl take the 5.0 off the line do to the torque of the long stroke, but in the end the 5.0 will win given the better breathing of the big bore? Give your thoughts on this. I am really asking about the advantages and disadvantages of an over square motor (5.0) verses the square motor (4.6). But in my dreams I'd love to have the under square 5.4 becuase of the low end torque off the line.

Hrm I don't know if your confused or me. From my knowledge the 4.6 stock should be faster than the 5.0. 4.6 Have much more computer gizmos helping them along. Now the 4.6 is a higher rpm engine, so the torque on the 5.0 will be a benefit. 5's redline at like 5 grand, and I think 4.6's are 6.25 or something (without going to look at my car). Also the 5's have many more and much cheaper mod parts out there, that is a huge factor in choosing. Just take a supercharger, you could get a s-charger installed on a 5 for around 2,500, go to a 4.6 and your looking at like 4,000. I believe the 4.6's (Curb Weight: 3227 lbs Edmunds.com) are not that much heavier thanthe 5.0's, (<FONT size=2>Curb Weight: 3144 lbs.</FONT> Edmunds.com). <edited><editID>mabguru</editID><editDate>37992.6284375</editDate></edited>

What confuses me is how the 4.6 revs higher given the small 90.2mm bore and long 90mm stroke compared to the big 101bore on the 5.0 and only 76mm stroke. Computers I guess as you said??? "In theory", the 5.0 should out rev the 4.6, but doesn't. Usually big bore short stroke is good for high hp and high revs, that is why race engines use that setup (e.g. F1)

Don't forget that the 4.6 can rev higer and generate less friction with the overhead cams. The 5.0 has the lifters and pushrods to move and the pushrods are in the way of the air flowing through the intake. That probably will also disrupt the flow at higher rpm.</P>
Just a few latenight brainstorms on the question.</P>

How an engine revs and what it revs to is all decided in the cams grind. The 5.0 was very conservatively cammed from the factory.</P>
There was a SHOOTOUT in FF&MM a few years back where they put a Fox body 5.0 up against a 4.6 and i think that the 4.6 by a hair beat the 5.0Do a search you should be able to find the article. It was quite a battle though.</P>
