Default Shifting

Hey I'm new here. Just got an 01 GT . I'm sorry if this has been answered before (believe me I searched), but what RPMs should I shift at to go the quickest (stock GT)? also, at what RPMs should I start to worry about something in the engine breaking? Thx alot.

on a stock GT i would say 5500 is plenty. the cams and what not stop breathing at about 5500 so you will start to lose power any higher.

when you have full traction and try not to bounce off the rev limiter. i think its set at like 6000 not sure, but try to stay at 5500 no higher there is no need on a stock GT

the rev limiter is set higher than 6K

i think its somewhere between 6500 and 6800, not sure where though, ive been there 3 or 4 times but never long enough to see where it was [&:]

as far as worrying about blowing up your engine.. as long as you dont remove the rev limiter, then you probably wont blow it up by over revving it

however, i dont recommend using the revlimiter as a means by which to decide when to shift.. probably a good way to greatly shorten the life of your car

youre probably like i was though,
this is your first stick, your first performance car, and youre not really sure how the two mesh
i know it was a few months before i got anywhere near comforable with running my car out hard to about 6K. give it time, and you'll learn what your car likes to do, and what it doesnt

and welcome to the forums

Thanks alot . yeah it is my first stick and basically my 1st performance car. I had an 03 auto v6 before this which was fun for awhile, but then my dad got an 06 and gave me his old (my new) GT [sm=burnout.gif]. I've been driving it for awhile and feel very comfortable with regular driving, but your right it still scares me when I get out to even 5000 rpms. What exactly is the advantage of pushing the revs so high? (I know it has something to do with hp, but...) Any other tips I should be aware of? Thx again.

Your engine produces its most HP at a certain rpm. Every car has a power curve, the graph you get from a dyno, etc. You want to shift at the rpm where max HP is reached since once you pass that point, you are producing less power but the engine is working harder. The whole purpose of gears is to help keep the engine within its powerband, where it is able to produce power most efficiently.

If you want to have fun for a while until you're comfortable find an empty road and drive gears 1-3 out kind of slow and see where you feel the most power at. With a Stock GT you will prob. feel more power around 3000 RPM or a little more. Once you get used to it and feel you want more power, you can 3.73's for low end torque if you want it to get up to speed fast.
