Yes you can shift it and it wont hurt a thing. You can use it to engine brake in any gear also. They make ratchet shifters that you can use to make positive shifts also. This info comes from Fords Manual.
If this position is selected at normal road speeds, the transmission will shift into second gear, then into first when the vehicle reaches a speed below approximately 45 km/h (28 mph).
This position provides:
First gear operation only.
Engine braking for descending steep grades.

yeah works best just to put it in D and floor it. Or if you want to launch a little harder hold the break and to around 1500-2000rpms anything above on stock converter just starts to spin.
