Default clutch problems (chatter, etc)

i got a King Cobra clutch and new t/o bearing installed about 2 weeks ago. since then, I have probably driven about 500 or 600 miles. within the past few days, the clutch has become much easier to push in, BUT... there is a weird noise, almost like a grinding, when i have the clutch all the way out (I have to drive it with my foot putting a tiny amount of pressure on the pedal). also, there is about maybe an inch or so of play in the pedal as where there was none the other day. then, today, on the way home, the pedal almost feels like its sticking. any suggestions??

just got back from the shop. they said the throwout bearing shattered or something like that so its causing my pedal to bind? they said I need to get ahold of mustang tuning and talk to them about warranty on the clutch and a labor claim because the bearing could have shattered the clutch forks or whatever they are called. does this sound legit?

First off, did the shop warranty the work they did? That clutch came with a new throwout bearing (TB). It sounds to me like they didn't install it properly. I highly doubt the TB shattered the fork. If the clutch wasn't the correct size, or if it was installed incorrectly, it is possible the fork was rubbing on the pressure plate at full disengagment. The entire time, the noise has been from the TB, but the scraping sounds you heard were very possibly from the fork touching the pressure plate or something else in the bellhousing. Take it back in and have them look at where the ball end of the fork is at full depression of the clutch pedal. They'll be able to see if its rubbing anything. -And they should have seen that before they originally gave it to you, and also noticed it on the short test drive of your car. Try to deal with the shop as much as possible. It sounds like you bought the clutch from Mustang Tuning and had a local shop install it. Often times when you do that, the shop won't warranty anything on the clutch assembly. If you tell Mustang Tuning that the shop, through improper installation, caused breakage, they might not be symathetic. Try to deal with the shop. IMO, I think it's the shop's fault, and the shop should fix the problem.

alright so the oddest thing... i just went out to try my car out again, and its not doing it right now... i took it around the block pretty hard and no problems??? i'm driving to san antonio later so i'll see how it does on a 50 mile drive probably in traffic alot. its just kinda strange how it was so bad and now, nothing. but, if it does come back after the car really warms up, what could that be a sign of?? sorry for the rambling, i'm just confused!

sorry to bring up an old topic but its still bothering me. the squeaking from the pedal is gone, and its not getting stuck when releasing it. now, whenever I am driving in 1-3 gear, I have to hold the clutch in with barely any force or else it makes an awful grinding type noise. and in 4th or 5th at highway speed, the pedal vibrates really bad and you can hear it..almost like a drumroll. I have talked to a few people around here that know more about this stuff than I do, and they have heard of throw out bearings going bad pretty quick and pressure plates going bad. If this was the case, ford racing doesn't warranty clutches so i'm pretty much gonna have to shell out for a new one. the shop swears up and down that it is the TOB and they are pretty reliable guys. any more suggestions on the problem??? also, is the clutch fork on a gt t45 any different than the one on a cobra one? i switched my 97gt t45 to a 98 cobra t45...could this be a problem or are they the same? thanks for the patience.

Hey guys! Sounds to me like the pilot bearing in the transmission. Do you mind my asking, how many miles are on your stang?

I have a trans rebuild planned and I am putting in new synchros, seals, and the front and rear bearings.

But I would take it back to the guys who did the work. Then they can see if it's something they screwed up. Good luck at any rate
