Default Lifting Engine

Im trying to lift the engine in my 2000 mustang (4.6) approximitaly 2" to replace the oil pump ( hopefully not the whole engine) Haynes manual says i can lift it with the lifting lugs below the valve cover.... problem is they arent there. What is the best way to lift the engine? I have straps, chainfalls, and a beam in the garage to lift from, just need a attach point on the engine. im thinking exhauxt manifold ? any other suggestions or am i looking for the lifting lugs in the wrong area ?

Default RE: Lifting Engine

I asked the same question before, I wanted to lift my motor to do my Longtube headers. But the only suggestion I got was to lift front the intake manifold bolts. That sounds to risky for me, those bolts are tiny. I woudl not trust lifting a 500lb motor with those. Even if your just going to leave the transmission on and have that supported by the crossmember. I also read the haynes manual, I read the same thing you did. My suggestion would be the bolts on teh timing cover, there pretty large. there are two sets I would suggest. I labeled them one set with white arrows and the other with green arrows. I would just hook the strap to two of those unbolt the motor mounts from teh k-member and keep the transmission bolted to the crossmember and lift it up, it wont put as much strain on those bolts. And it probably will give you enough clearance. If not I would suggest dropping the k-member while you have the engine support with an engine hoist or better a engine craddle that stradles the engine bay and just hold the engine in place.

I saw a picture of the engine being held up by what appeared to be the bolts for the alternator. Sorry I can't remember where I was that, but if I can find it, I'll post it here.

03GT reminded me I saw a picture of a guy who lifted the motor out by putting a strap under the exhaust manifolds on either side, that would no doupt hold the motor.

Oh but heres a picture I just found. The engine is being held up by the lower alternator bolts, and probably the rear bolts where the transmission bolts to the block.
