I have a 97 GT, now to all of you automatic guys, how do you race?

Do u just put it in Drive and go?

Or do you go 1st, 2nd, D?

What are the pro's and con's?

This is pretty much an age old debate, but from what I have seen and experienced, manually shifting an auto is a waiste of time and energy.

well today i put my car in first gear for the first time and slammed the gas and i just like sat there and roasted, then in d if i just slam the gas i burn out a lil n take off, so im assuming if u want to look sweet and burn out just put it in 1st and slam the gas, but if u wanna get off the line and go just slam the gas in D? (i shift in a manual at red line anyways, and thats where my automatic shifts when the gas is to the floor) cuz by the time u get done spinning in (1) youd already be gone in D?

Just leave your car in "D". Even when you manually shift it, it will only change gears when the computer tells it to; Unless you have a shift kit. I have have a shift kit and when i race I still leave it in drive because the computer can shift it faster and at the correct RPM's than what I could do it. Just leave it in "D" when raceing and when just cruseing. JMO

+1 Turn of your OverDrive too. When I race at the track, here's what I do...

I stage...
turn off the OD
put the car in D
left foot on the brake
Rightfoot on the gas.
give the car some ags until the assend of the car rises.
drop the brake and give it the go...

Practice makes perfect as far as how high to get your rpms and how much gas you give it at the green light.

I bested a 60' of 2.130. Not terribly bad for an auto with 3.73's on street tires

OD should be off during normal street driving and on on the highway for the most part.

Emann,

what do you mean when you state, "I stage.."
