Ive never opened up the rear end on a car, and dont know what to exactly expect right off the bat.

How hard is it to change the rear gears your self? I have access to a car lift, and can get any tool I'll need. Are their any speciality tools I'll need to get? Anyone have any advice or a guide?

edit: taking out the 4.10s and going back to 3.73s.
If the part in bold is true, you have no business doing it alone. Take it to a shop, if they are charging more than 300-400 bucks for the gears and install they are raping you. Go to a mustang specific performance shop, they will do a better job at a cheaper price generally, and since the install really hasn't changed since the foxbody days they will surelyi get it right.
you are saying that 300-400 should be out the door for the initial cost of gears and the installation cost???
shouldnt it be about $300 for installation alone...then you have to buy gear oil....gears (150 and up)...speedcal or tuner (100-400)...bearing kit if you have more than 50k miles most professionals will recommend one (100)...might as well throw some new clutches on that posi while you are in there.....

i added it up for me and between gears, rebuilding the posi, installation, a tuner and tune it will cost me $1k + or - a couple hundred
You don't need a 100 dollar rebuild kit or new clutches in the rearend. I paid 600 bucks for the shim kit, gears, fluid, and labor and I got R A P E D by a stealership (didn't have a ford specific shop to go to, so I went to a dealer). You should be out the door, minus the speedcal, for between 300 and 400 dollars.

So far as the speedcal, you can spend 100 bucks and get one, or you can buy a handheld and have something you can use more of in the future. I wouldn't count the entire speedcal cost as part of the gear install, as you also get the ability to adjust your tune, datalog, etc etc.
