Default gears in chicago, a joke?!

ok so I'm a college athlete, since football is a year round job and my chem/bio majors give me oh so many fun hours of lab, I have no time to work except possibly over summer. Of course there's summer school and lifting/training for football, so even then it's hard to find a job, money's obviously tight! I gotta squeeze whatever I can outta Xmas and my bday. I just talked to Speed Inc. who quoted me 550 total on gears, but said ABS sensors may break and they're 50 each and a pain to install, so probably even more in labor. Then I talked to sutton high performance and got quoted SEVEN HUNDRED. Am I losing my mind here? Why is everybody claiming to pay 400-500 total and I'm getting quoted 550(possibly 700+ if ABS sensors bust) and 700(and who knows if that includes sensor work if they break)

I live in the chicago suburbs and the area is kinda hoyty toyty, i mean i paid 15K for a 5 year old mustang with 55K on the clock and that was a fine deal, though apparently people could buy that car for 11 grand wherever they live. Either way this blows, gears may be crossed off my list of possibilities!

Any input on shops or charges or cost, or just fellow ranting about ripoffs is appreciated

I feel your pain about the money being tight. I played baseball in college and would be gone all summer playing in summer leagues so working was out of the question. I just graduated so now I actually will have the time and money to do stuff. In terms of the gears quote, I assume the first place you called quote may have included the gears. If it does, ask them if you can buy the gears and stuff and bring them in and just have them install and pay for the install. As for the abs sensor, just tell them you'll deal with it when you have to cross that road.

Typical gear install is $300-$400 not including parts. Figure $200 or so for the gears and $90 for the master bearing kit, and you are looking at $600-$700 total. Don't worry about the ABS sensors, if the shop busts them I would make them replace it out of their pocket since it wasn't broke when you took it in. If its a reputable shop they should know what they are doing and know how to get the axle out without busting the sensor.

Theres a place in Waukegan called speedquest performance that did my springs for 275, and I think they said gears would be right around the same. The only thing that blows about this place is that they specialize in ricers, they are everywhere there, but they claim to do maros and stangs all the time for different things. I havent had a problem yet with my springs, and they got them done in an a hour and a half.

They take a long time. I know I busted an ABS sensor when I installed mine. There's really nothing a 'good' shop can do to plan on breaking or not breaking them. Just depends how they are on there...a 100% terrible design on fords part.

well that's some good news, i mean the fact that it won't reflect at all on the shop's competancy. Guess I'll just save up $700 and see how it goes
