Tires... Do you have the right tires?

The type of tires on ourcars is actually more important than extra weight. Don't run summer high performance tires, no matter how new, in the winter. If you have any questions about how well your tires will do, go to the Tire Rack on the internet and research your tires cold weather traction ratings.

I bought my Mustang with new Kuhmo tires just before last winter and ended up in a ditch even withextra weight in the trunk. After looking it up, I found the tires had an "n/a" (not applicable) cold weather rating. The tread patternand tire compound is simply not designed for cold weather or winter driving.

Other than sand, you may want to carry a bag of salt (the big 40 lbs bags for throwing in your drieway or something). It still adds the weight like sand, but if you do get stuck, you can use the salt to melt the snow/ice. My dad used to do this in his truck. It came in handy a few times having some salt.

Good luck.. No matter how much you prepare for it, if you hit black ice... your screwed. Totaled the girlfriends last winter. Nailed a concrete wall after hitting some black ice. Sucked pretty bad. [:@]

The winters here arent too bad though, Ive got it pretty good.

Oh... and put a case of beer in the trunk as well, it will add weight, its always going to be cold and... If you do end up wrecking your baby you can just go ahead and start knocking a few back. It will make the pain a little easier.

you'll be just fine as long as you take it easy and remember that, for snow and ice anyways, we have too much power, bad tires, not enough weight, and low clearance. My wife and I survived a winter in Michigan with ours as a daily driverso you can make it. She did, however, back it into the snow pile on the side of the driveway and I had to dig it out a few times. I was not a happy person. Keep the traction control on. If you start sliding sideways on the city streets it will help keep you from pitching it completely sideways. If you have a to go over alittle hill of snow, one that we probably wouldn't clear, justturn the traction control off, hit thegas, take it at an angle and pray. I like the bag of salt idea, I'm going to have to put on in my car this winter. Also don't forget to wash it regularly toget the salt off of it.Good Luck!
