The sensor that tells the electric odometer that the car is moving. I forget where I heard it but I think it was an automotive teacher or something like that. He said that the sensor is usually on the wheels that don't recieve engine power so that any extra tire spin(burn outs, ice, snow) don't count for actual milage. If that is true than if the OP puts his friends car on jackstands and lets the thing run for a few hours all he'll do is waste gas not put miles on the car.
The speedo is mechanical, the odometer is electric. The two aren't directly connected. If the tire turns a certain amount of times then thats how they can calculate distance it yhas gone, the speed the car is going is irrelavent it doesn't matter if you're going 100mph or 15 mph, 10 miles is 10 miles.
