Default IRS

is there anything wrong with having IRS as opposed to what stock GT's have?? idk how to word it but if i were to get a cobra (99/01) as opposed to a 99-04 GT, and the cobra is STOCK and i do NOT put sticky tires on it, would i have to worry about snapping the IRS?? how much is it to build up an IRS?

please tell me all thepros/cons of the IRS bc i am considering buying a cobra but for the amount of money im going to buy it for and the chance of something breaking, ill be in debt [&o]

Replace the bushings on the IRS and youll be fine. IRS sucks but its not as bad as everyone says it is. Just have to get used to it. You need to talk to Zack about this one (ZW99gt)

The differential bushings aren't hard to install. The IRS mounting bushings, on the other hand, are a bitch. Maximum Motorsports has them for around $120 total. Make sure you get one of the bushing removal tools. It'll cut 4 hours off the install time.

A shop will charge you for 6 hours of labor at least, so do it yourself.

i wouldn't have to pay for install, i just wanted to know if it was expensive considering i'd b buyinga car for like 13K and than have to drop another whatever on it ya know... but what im also asking isif a 99/01 cobra STOCK will break on me and such?? it would b my DD and id romp on it a few times here and there and probably go to the track a couple times.. but will anything on it break "easily" that i should know about?

hard no, tedious yes... the mm rear grip kit for the irs should be considered. It's not hard to make thr IRS a decent option if you do your own install it may even be cheaper than properly setting up our live axles.

procharged, 4.10's, hard shifts an DR's and i never experienced driveline failure in my 99 cobra. IRS guru's will tell you its not the power but the wheel hop that will destroy ashaft. the bushing upgrades above reduce this wheel hop (and the subframe bushings can fix the 12mm/14mm bolt problem found in some IRS units) and can helpreduce the chance of failure. overall if ur not afraid to get on it with enough sensibility to get off it when it starts to hop,go for the cobra (i'd say an 01 because ofmore shaft splines).

I beat the hell out of my IRS. Wore out stock bushings, FRPP diff brace. That's it. 1.7-1.8 60fts for 6 months, and a couple of 1.6 60fts, then she snapped like a bitch.

The wheel hop was horrible on street tires, but never not once did it hop on D/R's on slicks. Just put some good tires on it, and don't try to launch off the limiter (alot) and the IRS is a freaking blast. It is so much smoother, and makes driving comfortable.
