Default heater core

I have a 98GT conv. and the heater coreis leaking badly. The dealer first quoted me a price of $800.00 over the phone thenonce it was in their shop uped the price to $1400.00. This seems way too high to me but I'm kind of stuck, I need my car fixed. Is this the going price? Any advice?

A friend of mine had a mid 90's Taurus that needed a heater core and was quoted over $1000 to do it at a local shop. He opted to do it himself and it took him over 17 hrs to do so and a trip to the ER because of getting a bad cut doing so. He said he would have gladly have let the shop do it had he knew what he was getting into.

So, depending on how these cars are set up, it probably is a ball park price.

If i were you i would just bypass the heater core at the firewall for a while and ride around and get some price quotes! I wouldnt take it to the dealership though. 1400=ripped at the seams lol

800 is an acceptable price IF your not capable of doing it yourself. I had my car apart for 2 days. In short, Dash, passenger seat, center counsole, A/C lines, kick panels all have to been disconnected to pull out your heater core. I said the seat because theres just more room to move around. Plus the have to refill the HVAC and make usre there isn't residue left in your vents which can cause mildue.

If mine goes out again, I'll pay someone OR i'll be cussing at myself or anyone around me for 2 days, irritatted that I bought a ford.

It is a bitchy job, as sxynerd has oulined, and one that unfortunately seems to be necessary someplace around the time of a car's getting to be 10 years old. Flushing and replacing the coolant every couple of years can buy some time, but it will get you eventually.

And I still smell Coolant every time I turn on my HVAC. Do it or get it done as soon as you can.
