Default Broken Tach

96 Cobra with a broken tachometer. Ford is checking it out for me but they say if it's the PCM it could be $650 to fix.

Also, if it's the instrument cluster, I can't even find one on ebay or anywhere else and it sounds like Ford might not be able to get one for it.

If so am I screwed? Does anyone know where I can find an instrument cluster for this car if Ford can't get one?

I would try www.corral.net/forums, they have a really good classified section.

Would the cluster from a GT work? Or would there be problems with that?

Physically I think it would work but your redline is going to be off. There could also be a confliction with the PATs system if you swap but not sure.

I guess Ford can replace it and it turned out to be the cluster. $170 labor and $310 on the cluster.

They also found out the car is going to need a clutch soon. Estimated $750-850 on that.

Not sure I'm going to buy the car now. He already wants $10,200 for it (96 mystic, 55K miles) and with all this stuff needing work sounds to me like he wants more than it's worth at this point.

Just start subtracting all of this from the cost of the car. Go to him and offer him 8k and if he says no, walk and don't look back.

If he's asking 10,200 and I subtract all the repairs it ends up being 8900.

My roomate thinks this car is worth more than that because it's a mystic and hence likely to be worth substantially more than a regular cobra down the road.

I don't know what to think here. I do know I want the tach fixed before I buy the car. I am thinking about making an offer of 9400-9500 or thereabouts if he fixes the tach before hand. I can fix the clutch later this year and pay for it myself.

Sound fair? Honestly looking for opinions here. Thanks

I'm guessing you probably are right about the mystic being worth more in the end I'm just not sure if I would let that effect all that much of the value now. It's not like you're trying to low ball him on for a mint car. There are mechanical things that are wrong with the car that should either be fixed before the sale or subtracted from the cost of the car (or compromised on). IMO that's the way business should work. If he wants top dollar for the car he should the car needs to be in top dollar condition, which it is not. I'm sorry but just because the car MIGHT be worry more in the future doesn't mean I would pay more from something that is falling apart now.

Gotcha.

There are a few other additions to the car that add a little value. New battery. New tinted windows. Has a bra. Two sets of wheels and newer tires. New suspension. Magnaflow and a K&N.

I can see 9600 if he gets the tach fixed but that's it. If I put a clutch in then I'll end up almost 10,400-10,500 into the car. He was originally asking for 10,200.

High book private party on a non mystic 96 cobra is 9,600 for reference. The mystic option was originally an extra 800.

Well then I think you answered your own question.[8D] Just don't get star struck into a bad deal. When I went looking for a mustang I found the perfect 98 Black on black cobra and it got sold out from under me so I as pissed and kinda impatient so I kind of hopped on the next car that came around and that's how I ended up with a 96 GT[:@]. My point is there are plenty of other cobras out there, don't get too caught up in this one.
