Default SOHC vs. DOHC

i know the first ones the cobra and the second ones are gts but serisouly wtf is the difference...

i dont get how there both 4.6 liters but cobras easily own

and if the cobra is so much faster then how come you guys dont just upgrade from a gt to one instead of spending so much on superchargers and stuff

not trying to mock anyone....just curious

i know some of you guys have prob put like 10 grand into your ride and to me it just seems like for the extra 10 grand you could do a trade in or something

although the displacement is the same, the 4v heads are much more efficientwhich is why they make more power than our 2v heads (in a nutshell)

GT's are a 4.6 liter SOHC 16v motor. 2 valves per cylinder.

Cobras and Mach 1's are a 4.6 liter DOHC 32v motor. 4 valves per cylinder.

SOHC stands for single over head cam. That means there is one cam mounted on top of each cylinder head. So two cams in total. DOHC stands for dual overhead cam, meaning 2 over each head, 4 in total.

A lot of older cars and most GM cars are OHV, or overhead valve. In that case there is one cam in the middle of the engine block, and the cam moves the valves through pushrods.

Cobras make so much more power because the 4v heads flow so much better. You can put 4v heads and intake on a 2v, but all the other little parts required to make it work will cost the same if not more than an entire motor swap.

Oh, and just because an engine is 4.6 liters doesn't mean jack ****. What makes the power in the motor is the total combination of engineering that goes into every little part. Before technology got to where it is, bigger used to mean more power. The 351 had more power than the 289, the 408 had more power than the 351, etc... Now look at cars. 2.0 liter 4 cylinder Hondas make almost as much power as the new V6 Mustang that's twice the size as fas as displacement. You can't just look at cubes or liters anymore.

I decided to put the money in my GT for various reasons.
1st...I wouldnt buy any 4v besides a terminator or GT500 due to the fact the rest of the 4v have the same HP limit to the stock shortblock as the GT. 2nd...I already had the GT
3rd...the price of the car and insurance of the terminator just wouldnt be a wise decision for me since I am in college and my current car looks good enough and itll beat a stock terminator.
4th...I like the learning experience I acquire from building my own monster
5th....I prefer the torque table of the 2v
6th...Everyone expects a cobra or mach to be very fast...very few expect a GT to be that quick which makes me unique
7th...I like the sound of the GT throughout the rpm band...even though the 4v has a better idle
8th....The GT can easily be made into a 600rwhp beast and that is clearly fast enough for me on the street
9th...As mentioned above I am 20 and 4v insurance just doesnt fit my budget. Id prefer not to spend all my money on a car.
10th...The GTs gas mileage OWNS the 4v gas mileage

I do believe that guys that have the funds to do so should go and get a cobra. The main reason that we have so much invested in our gt's is because its an over an extended period of time kind of process. As this happens we bond more with the car and become attached, some people do not have this, but I was originally going to trade my gt for a mysticchrome cobra, then when I thought about how much more I'm gonna pay and all the work I've put into the gt, the cobra just didnt make sense.

I already have the t56 out of a cobra, I am just debating and throwing around the idea of maybe a 4v swap. I do commend the cobra's heads on their superior flow but the 2v can crank out more than enough power for 99% of the mustang gt's out there. What I really do want to swap is the IRS tho, true they arent perfect from the factory, but with a properly setup irs, handling characteristics can be sooo much different. I just dunno if the increase in complexity(more parts that can break on the track) is worth the time/money. As someone that has the parts to properly setup a solid rear axle, it is the same amount to buy a torque arm(or tri link)/panhard bar/lower control arms as it is to properly setup an irs.

The reason I put so much money into making my gt fast is because I have much more pride in my car when I pull up to an 03-04 cobra and stomp it like it was a non pi gt.

Im I missing something here? What mods do u have to enable u to stomp cobras? I mean, are u running 12.6's at the track, cause thats what properly driven termis run in stock form. If u truely can beat them with your mods, u have an awesome pkg for sure.

to swap a 4v in your gt (unless you get a really good deal) will cost more then to just sell your gt and buy a cobra. theres alot more then just the motor involved (ecu etc..)
