Default engine building boo

I think I have decided to build my engine myself. I will have the help of my bro who works at a GM dealership and has an LS1. I am looking for some good books on building engines. I hear Sean Hyland has one out. Is it good??? I have a good amount of tools at my disposal. It is enough to build it but, I am kinda intimidated by measuring clearances for the bearings and such. What kind of measuring calipers and such do I need??? Thanks for any info.

Buy plasti-guage. It's real cheap. It's a green plastic roll. You cut a pice out and lay it under the bearings. Torque them down and then take back it off. The plasti-guage will spread because it gets squished and you use the card that comes with it to measure the thickness once fully torqued... Now that I read that I noticed it seems confusing. [8D] Look up plasti-guage online, maybe you can find better info on it. I can't explain it, I just know how to use it.
