did i get screwed?
Always, ALWAYS get a written statement if a price is agreed upon. If they promise it and say it's a certain amount of time, then they take longer, that's their fault, they should've given you a better quote.
well my boys that sold me that part and own the speed shop siad it would be 80 so i assumed 80 cuz they said he does them all the time and that was the going price so they shot me what they thought it was but can't be mad at them cuz they dont own the garage it was done at so its this guys fault.

Did you even ask him the price or just give the car to him and say have at it because of what your shop buddies told you???
If you assumed the price was $80 because of what they said it was and if you didn't ask first to check, then it is 100% YOUR fault, NOT his!!!
You should have asked him, don't go blaming him unless he specifically told YOU directly $80 first then jacked the price up.
Don't pass the frigging buck on him then cry about it.
You screwed yourself for not asking first, he didn't screw you, he said he ran into problems thus resulting in the higher price, 100% understandable.
I hoped you learned your lesson to ask next time and not go by what "your boys" tell you and ask how much a project will cost....
I wouldn't be exactly trusting "your boys" anymore either for giving info that may or may not be correct.

first off Lynn the way it went was the guys at the speed shop recommended this guy called and he confirmed 80 dollars. I then went ahead made the appointment dropped the car off and not only till i got there to pick it up did he ever mention a price change or him having problems, so he should have called me if he planned to change the price. Any good mechanic will call a customer before doing anything that will drasticly change the price at least from my experience. So yes it is his fault for being screwy with the price, and yes its my friends fault that owns the shop for suggesting him. And i paid thebill and told him my unhapiness with the price change and he even admitted it was hisfault. He said I know i said 80 but it took longer than i expected blah blah blah i was so late for work at that point that i didn't even want to hear his sob story.so I'm not crying about anything i was simply asking what everyone thouhgt was a fair price for the job.
I am not trying to sound like a dick here, but being realistic.... you did not get the quote in writing beforehand, and you didnt do the right things to make him change it back to the original price before leaving his driveway. kinda sucks, but you got screwed and didnt do a damn thing to prevent it.
i dont think there was much i can really do though. I agree i should have got the quote in writing and wish i had, but unfortuanetly that was my fault. I just think this guy did bad business by going back on his word and i will not refer nor use him for any installs again lesson learned i guess.
