advancing spark usuing an sct tuner
ORIGINAL: kingofqueenz
i have the same question, i've read other threads but none of them fully explain it, they just post an article from a website with a dyno run. I advanced mine to the max on my diablo tuner and im running 93 octane and my car is running strong, but is there a risk by me doing this? should i back it down a notch to be safe? can i blow a spark plug or something?
ok, my exhaust is too loud to hear detonation so i don't know if it is. I dont hear any pinging, i have it at the max spark and im running 93, i don't know why your wasting your money putting 2 gallons of 101 if the tune is for 93. If you have the steeda timing adjuster then i could understand y your using 101 octane. What type of problems can arise from pinging and detonation?

couple quick questions for you....
what does brent from brenspeed set the timing at when he tunes for his 93 octane tunes? (whats this?? you have no clue since you have a diablo tuner? ah i see...)
let me ask you this......so because your car doesnt ping/knock on a certain degree of timing...this automatically means my car wont knock/ping at the same setting? (lol of course its going to be different!! not all cars are the same!! some GT's ping/knock just from brents 93 octane tune and have to turn the timing down!!)
is a diablo tuner and all of its settings EXACTLY the same as SCT's? (whats this....you dont know b/c you dont own an sct tuner? ah...i see....)
so what does adding 2 gallons of 101 octane do?? HELPS GARUNTEE that i dont detonate/knock/ping/ruin my motor, when i advance the timing as far up as it will go on brents 93 tune. its called better safe than sorry...
now that its clear/established you dont have a clue about what you are talking about.....and the info you DO know, you got from me....
good luck getting all of your questions answered.

guarantee * and the reason your wasting money on 101 octane is answered in your own post, because u never had the ***** to see if it would ping or detonate which would cause no damage if it happens a few times. So basically you said some do and some don't and you don't even know if yours does because u keep putting in 101 octane for no reason. The 101 is a safety measure that doesn't give any horsepower what so ever. Its a waste of money. If your car does ping on 93, then lower the timing one notch and take it from there. You might lose 1 hp but ull save 10+ dollars at the pump every week.
Does anyone know what the max timing advance is for the 96-98 cobra's on 93 octane? My tuner has me at 23degrees @ WOT. He's not a Ford tuner, but a Gm tuner. Could he go further?????? Timing=hp!!!
put the tuner at the max timing that it allows u, and if it knocks then retard it, and try again. Im at 93 octane with timing at the max on my diablo tuner and i have no pinging or detontation whatsoever. There is people on here that have bad detonation and pinging from this but i don't and i have the max horsepower possible out of the tuner.
if you dont hear any new noises what-so-ever, and she is running fine/strong, then you are good to go.
pinging sounds kind of like knocking.....and it is noticable...if you dont hear any knocking (that wasnt already there) then all is well.
