Default whirling sound?

I noticed a whirling sound from my rear end and it does not happen all the time. My car is running fine, no issues with my clutch, or shifting grinding. The noise is not my blower it definitely coming from the rear of my car it does not do it all the time but can hear it over my exhaust and with the roof down. It funny because it always notice it happening coming out of Boston on the bumpy highway road but also will do it on the smooth part of the highway. It comes and goes.

I really notice it when I take my foot off of the gas or hit the brakes and it does it in 4th and 5th gear no too sure about the other gears. I sound is noticeablebut not constant. It is not a grinding noise but a light whirling noise?

My car is 5 speed with 56,000 miles.

Any help would be appreciated - Keith

The best way to discribe this sound is anyone familar with driving a box truck that has a 2 speed rear end 5 speeds low and 5 speed high? The sound is the same sound when you try to flip the speeds from high to low (on the truck) but it does not tranny does not engage right a way and makes that whirling noise. My car isnotas loud but the same noise without any banging.Note I have no problem excelerating or driving....

Rear end needs to be looked at. Upgrade your diff cover. I just replaced mine and i feel alot better knowing that i have a stronger cover. Since you're blown and have 4.10 gears, you def don't need to be riding around with a stock diff cover.

my vote is a bad contact pattern btwn the ring and pinion, or a bearing failing
