Default Got a GPS

Hi guys,
I just got a GPS for the car (one the mounts to the windshield and charges through the cig lighter), but i have a problem. My cig lighter doesn't work, and i know it's connected because i remember connecting it when i put in the short shifter. what could be the cause and how can i fix it. i know it has rechargable batteries but i would like to be able to charge it in my car and not just in my house because i would prefer to just leave it in the car. thanks guys.

Try fuses or follow the relay and see if it's disconnected somewhere else. I had the same problem and found a connection came loose up the line further.

You could hard wire the unit if you wanted to keep your cig lighter from being used. Just an option, we use to do it with radar detectors.

look for an open spot in the fuse block. Cars usually come with several empty ones. Some are hot all the time and others are only hot when the key is in the on or acc position. Or if you do end up fixing your lighter, they sell kits that you can hard wire to the back of the lighter socket, and just run the wires behind the panels; it just makes for a much cleaner look.

cigarette lighter probably blew a fuse. if you replace the fuse and it pops imediately check the inside of the cigarette lighter socket and make sure there isnt loose change shorting it out, ive seen this more than a couple times in my shop.
