Default Engine suggestions?

I got an 01 Cobra, my engine took a poop and I shopping for another engine. I was looking at Ford and Rhino Crate engines for around $4200 (Also, what is a core charge and do you get that money back?).I know absolutly nothing about the engines that I can swap in my car, but I've seen people dropping larger size engines or lighter engines used in different cars in an 01 Cobra.

Anyone got any suggestions or links to send me to for an engine I can drop in my car cause I am planning on swapping engines. I'm also not looking to spend a lot, I'm still in college. I'm looking around $4000 for used or reman engine cause I still have to pay for install labor.

Thanks for the help!

for 4 grand you should be able to buy a forged short block and still have the cash for install if your heads are still good.

A couple of shops told me that I had a lower end rod knock. Now the engine starts but it has a really loud knock. Would this damage the heads and/or what else would it damage?

it shouldnt have messed up the heads. rod knock normally means the rod bearing has spun on the crank and messed up the connecting rod and the crank+block. look in 5.0 mag or mm&ff for all the diffrent engine builders and start from there.

Look at MMR they sell good engines. Ihave heard peoplelooking for a wrecked navigator 97 -03 i believe, 4 valve 5.4L from a junk yard and theybuild it up from there. Ya unfortunatly i blew my motor and bought another stock motor with out looking around. I Payed 4k with install and regret it everyday that i drive it. Search google, yahoo, etc, before you make a decision. MMR has engines that start around 2500 i believe. Good luck!

Can I buy a shortblock and use my current blown engine's parts to complete the shortblock? Like say for instance I buy a shortblock from MMR cam I use my heads, intake manifold, etc. to complete the engine or what? I know nothing of shortblocks, longblocks and what is compatible between the two.

Thanks!

screw that, he should just buy a new rotating assembly and have it installed, for around 2k, why buy a whole new engine when the block is just fine?

A short block is not a whole engine. It is a block with the rotating assembly already installed. However, 2000AZ5.0GT makes a point, some parts fromthe ruined blockmay bereusable. If I'm notmistaken,01 Cobras came withthe forged crankshaft. In any case, the OP should try to assess theactual damage to the engine. From thereyou would have one of the following options to choose:
* have themotor rebuilt, balanced and blue printedlocally with forged pistons and rods.Can yourcrank shaft and block be reused?
* buy abalanced andblue printed short blockand haveyour heads, intake, etc.bolted onto it
* buy a crate engine.
The core charge isa deposit thatyou givetheengine company. When you give them your old motor, they refund you your deposit.

ok, what if I go with your second point and buy a shortblock, i was looking at this one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=320276973912. All I would then have to do is take parts (intake, heads, etc.)from my old engine and have them installed on the new shortblock? And thats it? So I buy a new shortblock, and use the parts from my old engine to make it into a longblock?

Sorry for so many questions...

again, that's too much work. take your engine apart, take the crank to a machine shop see if it's useable. If it's just a rod berring that's shot, you might be able to use the crank. Then all you will have to buy is 8 rods, and 8 pistons, hell you might even get away with having it rebuilt with new berrings. but figure out how Fubar'ed your engine is right now before you go out spending 4k when you only have to spend maybe 1.5k
