difference between v6 and v8

how can you tell the difference between a v6 and a v8, other than the sound, and are all gts v8???

98redstang 09-29-2008 03:56 PM

yes all gt's are v8's and besides the sound i would have to say power. Why are you asking this question?

Xemeth 09-29-2008 04:08 PM

Do you mean like seeing one on the road? Well, dual exhaust, fog lights, different side scoops (for 01-04 at least), bumper cutouts for exhaust.

Oh and... GT BADGES.

Seriously, telling the difference only takes a few seconds of critical thinking, and the ability to read.

Derf00 09-29-2008 04:12 PM

Open the hood, count the cylinders. 6 = V6 ; 8 = V8 = GT

That's the only TRUE way to tell. V6's can have dual exhaust and fog lights and those who don't know the sound can mistake a V6 for a V8.

steve0914 09-29-2008 04:23 PM

well people can make their car look like a v8 so only way to tell is like derf says

98redstang 09-29-2008 04:44 PM

I hate people that do that cause its retarted. Like when v6's make themselves look like cobras like thats retarted i think. idk

IDK man, a V8 sounds like a V8

a v6 sounds like a boat

haha true!

tbirdscwd 09-29-2008 06:47 PM

A v6 with duals def doesn't sound like a v8.
Like previously stated the easiest way is look for duals, exhaust cut outs, fog lights, etc... but the only way to tell for sure is to pop the hood.

2000AZ5.0GT 09-29-2008 07:32 PM

it's easier than that, just look through the front bumper cover at the radiator portion, the V6's look different than the GT's.

boduke0220 09-29-2008 07:45 PM

obviously the bumper, GT badges, wheels (sometimes) sound, dual exhaust or not..side scoop things

So do you think its ok when a GT looks like a Cobra? There is nothing wrong with a V6 trying to look like big brother GT unless they badge it....

Try and learn engrish for the next time you post kthx!

2000AZ5.0GT 09-29-2008 09:49 PM

well I think one thing that would be easy to spot is the brakes, I'm pretty sure the stock brakes on a GT are different than a v6 are they not?

yeah tell me about it, this 17 year old brought his car in to ford. I saw it from far, i was like sick i get to test drive the cobra. Everything looked like a 03 cobra, even interior. I got in turned it on, and I was like wtf sounds like a ****in v6. pooped the hood, and yep a freakin v6. lol

no. parts are ok. misbadging is bad.

really?

Pretty damn sure

I Marcos I 09-29-2008 11:16 PM

so what does the little horse mean a v6 or v8?

2000AZ5.0GT 09-29-2008 11:18 PM

running pony symbol with the tri flag behind it on the fender means it is a V6, unless it has the 40th anniversary or 35th anniversary emblems on it, which still has a running pony, and then it can be either

pcs 09-30-2008 01:31 AM

but those badges can also be swapped too. parts swaps are ok, if a v6 guy runs true duals, some of the kits require the use of a bumper with cutouts. fake badges.... that is for the stupid ricer crowd (honda badges on an acura and vice versa.) but here is the WORST thing so far ive seen to deface a stang besides wanna be ricer stangs, a "donk" stang. looked like 22"-24" rims on a 99-04 stang, noooooooooooo. it was jacked up (lifted) with huge rims. if i see it again im going to get a pic a post it. i dont know, id hate to see people try to turn stangs in to donks. almost every new dodge charger ive seen is not a muscle car, its a donk. i guess people can do what ever they want to their cars but i hate to see cars turned in to something they arent. muscle cars should stay muscle.

Pheonix 09-30-2008 06:52 AM

If it's cold outside, check the dual exhaust. If one tailpipe is smoking, it's a v6 :). Unless they got trickier on me. Down in Houston we don't get cold weather much, but when I've seen it in the cold, it's always like that when I come across one.

98redstang 09-30-2008 07:05 AM

No i know like getting cobra parts its cool why not upgrade your car? But im talking like full out like changing the badges and the back bumper so it says cobra and your really a v6 or a gt. Sorry i didnt mention gt's doing it too cause ive seen that to. When i said cobra replicas i meant like when they change the badges and stuff i think thats stupid. And as for the op the sound is definatly a dead give away. And as for the people saying pop the hood i think the op means like when your riding and see one so its kinda not practical to look over at one that your passing on the high way and tell him to pop his hood. But that is the true way to tell.

steve0914 09-30-2008 07:13 AM

i have seen very rare... type r v6 mustang before....

It cracks me up how GT owners don't know about sixer model Mustangs.

Um, they are the same front bumper covers.

What does this mean? Dual exhaust comes out both sides. So if a sixer is running duals, you'll see exhaust from both. It's not like one side is just a pipe haning there.

Only way to tell a modded sixer from an eight is by hearing it, or seeing the motor. And even then it's tough if it's a well built sixer. Many a Mustang fan have been fooled by what my motor sounds like with the roots blower on it.

Stock for stock visually, Sixers had Pony fender badging, no fogs, smaller wheels, single tail pipe, 01 to 04 had less aggressive side scoops.

and it cracks me up how many V6 owners are jack asses. While yes the front bumper covers are the same, I never said look at the front bumper cover, which means you obviously can't read.

I'm pretty sure either the support structure - radiator support structure if you couldn't figure that out yourself, or they use a different radiator, either way, if you look PAST the bumper cover, the same thing I said in my first post, they do look different.

LilRoush 09-30-2008 09:31 PM

Um, I'm fairly sure they are the same there as well.
And go back and read how much mis info is in this thread. Wrong comments about brakes (as per you), body parts, exhaust etc.... Sorry you took personal offence to a broad blanket statement. Someone seems sensative.

Edit: I guess you can hear my "boat sounding" Sixer when I pass you. LOL

01redstang 09-30-2008 10:03 PM

Might be out of the topic. But the guy that stole one of my side scoops. Has GTO badges on his sixer. right above his running ponies on each side front fender. Oh and one in the back under the blue oval. SO SO SAD yes he is MEXICAN. so am I but i dont do this type of Sh!t. lol

AZ, while an asshole, has quite a bit of work done to his car too.

when your 410rwhp sixxer passes my 600rwhp v8, I'll be happy to listen to the boat sounding exhaust

99GTvert 09-30-2008 11:35 PM

Tone it down, AZ.

2000AZ5.0GT 09-30-2008 11:46 PM

good enough?

NotStok 10-01-2008 12:03 AM

I'm still asked on a weekly basis by old guys if my car's got a 6 or an 8 in her even with my evil exhaust note. When I reply 8, it then turns into them talking about their old 5.0 while I shake my head inside.

dimebag 10-01-2008 12:11 AM

why exactly do you shake your head??? this could get interesting...

well, I would like to show you how ignorant you are to your entire vehicle, but I'll just show you, while you were trying to call me wrong, how wrong you were, here's a link to where you can get a v6 radiator, and a radiator for a gt, notice the different part numbers and everything

GT

V6

I would go further, but you get the idea. basically, your wrong, just admit it

lol dude dont even bother with that guy.. i remember like 6 months ago this guy rambled on and on about how a ford v6 is better than a ford v8..

2000AZ5.0GT 10-01-2008 12:24 AM

hahaha. well how about this. I'll let him make me a bet, I'll even downtune my car to 440rwhp for him.

Okay lilroush, lets go. Any track in the country, road race or strip. I'll bet you one month's salary that my car put's yours to shame. Your car is newer than mine, so maybe you have an edge?

Because normally I'll tell them it's a 4.6 and they are immediately disinterested, haha.
