Default Key Transponders?

I just went to have a new key made for my car, only to find out they have "transponders" in them and they cost $60! I didn't know our cars required them. What are they used for? I was expecting to pay a few bucks for a regular key....

Do you have both factory keys?

If so you can go to almost any ace hardware and they will/should have some Ford transponder keys for 30 bucks.

I worked there for a while so i have quite a few of those keys.

I do not have a factory key. I bought the car used and it isn't a Ford key that came with it. That key got ran over so I had to make a new one.

That sucks, you are going to have to go to a dealer and get another set made.

If you had two you could program any extra keys yourself and save like 150-200 bucks.

Actually Walmart was able to make me one for $60. They were the only place open on a Sunday.
