Could be a plethora of things.....head leak, spark plug leak from stripped spark plug hole (which was my issue), exhaust leak, timing chain, transmission.....the list goes on. You need to narrow it down more.

Btw, if it is the spark plug issue like I had, the kit to rebore a new hole and put a non helicoil, insert with a lip that actually locks into place is about $350 plus shipping. I bought the "Timesert" kit.

Had this happen to me. Change the oil to 10w40 if the noise is coming from the valve cover.

I had a ticking and that ticking turned into a knock and that knock into a spun bearing which in turn seized the block, So be careful and check your oil daily. I’m ordering parts right now and cleaning her up.

if your ticking is mostly at idle, like mine was, it very well could be failing/failed timing chain tensioners which causes the timing chain to slap against the plastic guide, its a tick/knock that doesn't quit sound like metal on metal.

Had 10w40 in mine and no problem. He could always start with 10w30. That maybe all he needs. If it is coming from the valve train.

I would take somewhere mine ticks every now and then but mine is the injectors these mod motors are some rattling sobs i know a guy who has a truck with a 5.4 and when you first start it up it rattles and knocks sounds like its about to fall apart but it has been doing this for 75,000 miles. does the ticking go away?
