Default Tuner Questions

When i do gears in the spring I'll be getting some sort of tuner at that time. I'm trying to decide between a VMP tuned X3 or the Sniper Special Forces software. Since it seems like most of the 'stang shops are running SCT software, that means I'll be doing my own tuning if I go with Sniper. Sniper looks pretty cut and dry for your bolt on 2V tuning, that's not my worry. First, does anyone know if Special Forces comes with any type of datalogging? But more importantly, for someone who hasn't done tuning before, when I get into my heavier mods like heads, cams, and blowers or turbos, how difficult does the tuning process become?

I have sniper special forces and would really recommend it. Special forces comes with a datalogging software called recon for free. Sniper makes an advanced tuning program called commando that I have no experience with. I would not know how to tune for h/c/i but to tune for a supercharger/turbo you can either run the base tune it creates which will be conservative or you can buy a wideband o2 sensor to dial in your air fuel ratio. After this, advance your timing and you're good to go. I only have a sniper 93 octane tune and the car feels much better. I did not do any more advanced tuning but I'm about to install a blower so I will be doing that soon. Hopefully if I'm careful it works out okay.

Cool. I've heard about Commando, I'm sure if I go Sniper I'll eventually upgrade to it. Also, for the power I want down the road, any one know the difficulties of tuning with a return style fuel system as well? I know Ox is working on one at the moment.

On special forces, one of the drop down menus allows you to select for a return style setup. I know Ox uses sniper too so he should be able to help more.

ddmsgtr1-

I think you would be happy going either way.

As far as SCT....Justin at VMP is a very good tuner. I have known him for awhile and have had soem great tunes from him!

Now, if you want to do your own tuning/tweeking, the Sniper software is great and pretty ease to use. The Special Forces does give you more options then an SCT handheld.

The Commando will give full control of the pcm. It also does include the Special Forces. This is cool because you can make a tune in SF and then open it in Commando and it will show what changes were made. (helps teach you).

You can upgrade to the Commando from the SF.

Below are a couple of links with more details/info for you.

If I buy a wideband A/F gauge or an EGT, will I be able to input that into the SF datalogger. And i know for the end user on a basic tune, Sniper destroys everything else out there, it just far more user friendly. But my big question is still what about my next moves? Has anyone tuned heads and cams with Sniper? Is it as simple as checking my AFR and getting the timing so I'm not pinging, or is a bit more advances when your tuning for something like a Trickflow head and CMS stage 2 or 2.5 cam?

with special forces you can tune for a stage 1 cam. anything over that and ur going to need commando to get the idle and all that right. like said above you can tune pretty well with f/i even nitrous with SF.

The downside to the sniper datalogger is you can not connect a wideband to it. BUT almost all widebands come with software to datalog that so its not really needed.

You can't go over stage 1 cams with special forces?
