Default shifting

ok so here's the deal, my friends and i decided to go out and race from a stop, i own a 99 gt 5 speed all stock, he has a 99 gt auto with an h pipe, cold air intake, and flowmasters, off the line we were neck and neck through first and second but he started pulling on me after that and beat me. now i have a few questions,

whats the best rpm to shift at when racing from a stop?

whats the best rpm to launch from at a stop?

will these numbers change if i get gears?

and what will those numbers be?

thanks in advance, i know i sound stupid but i know the people from these forums know what they're talking about.

lol

ummm, it all depends on your tires and such on what RPM to launch at.. most people just take it to like 2k-3.5k and slip the clutch.. practice will only tell you which RPM to launch at.

our cars stop making power at 5250 i believe. so i like to shift at exactly right there if i can..

the numbers wont really change with gears unless you are GUNNING it right from launch. most people like to gradually start rolling a little bit until they gun it so that they know they will have traction

iirc, we stop making power after 5500? so shift at that and there are many variables when finding a launching rpm. just go out somewhere and practice with different rpms, dumps, feathering it out, etc. and yes they will prob change with gears. weather, tires, road conditions. you just have to go out and practice somwhere to find what fits best for you.

Good questions ... nothing stupid about them. When my motor was stock I shifted @ 5800-5900 so the shift would be complete before hitting the factory rev-limiter (6050). These numbers won't change until you make major mods to the motor such as cams, nitrous or a blower. On street tires I launched at ~2500 with enough clutch slip to allow very little wheels spin. A lot depends on the traction available so experiment a little to find the "sweet spot". Some here may argue with these numbers but I assure you nobody has ran faster with that same mods as my car has.

Just try shifting at different RPM's to see what your car likes best. Maybe your 2-3 shift is lacking?
COB and LOG kick *** BTW.

I shift at 5650, throws me back in the seat every time. shifting at 6k gives the car to much time out of the power band for my taste

told ya nick!!!!!

Thanks for the tips guys... all very helpful.... i wasn't sure where he should shift i said somewhere around 5500 if i remember correctly. (after the races =/)

It wasn't by much, he just slightly started to pull on the 2nd to 3rd gear shifts. other than that really good races.

i think he could of had him, but he was spinning really bad off the line.

once again thanks.
