Default question about tapping my oil pan

For those of you who have tapped your oil pan, did you have to use a right angle drill? It doesnt seem like there is enough space in there to get a normal drill in there.

I don't think you can drill unless you are taking the pan off.

do not drill it unless you are plaining on taking the oil pan off. you are have to use a punch then tap the pan to get the threads for the fitting.

I'd remove the pan just so you can clean up the inside of your tap, any time I've ever drilled and tapped I've had metal chips on the other side.

Do you have to drop the k member to take the oil pan off a 99-04? I hear it is much better to take the pan off and either weld the fitting on or at least hold it on with a nut on the inside of the oil pan.

leave the oil pan where it's at, tap it, tread it and be done with it.

If you are punching/tapping, as soon as you're finished tapping they tell you to drain the oil. I would put your drain plug back in and fill up with fresh oil (not synthetic or anything expensive). Drain the fresh oil and go over it with a magnet. Keep doing this until no metal traces are in the oil. This way you know all the metal gets flushed out. Might be a PITA but I think it is better than having shards of metal going through your motor.
