They're potentially reliable cars...as reliable as the person owning it and driving it wants to be really. The issue you get into is how it has been maintained and driven in the past. The best bet for you is to take it to a reliable mechanic to have a detailed inspection.

mine has 192xxx and going strong. original motor and trans. somethings like COP's and what not will go out, but other than that if it was well maintained and not dogged every other trip it will last.

DEFINITELY TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC FIRST> GET A FULL INSPECTION!

These cars can absolutely be very reliable. The motors are in a gajillion vehicles, and parts are easy to come by. As long as you have a solid starting point, just maintain it properly, and it will last you a long time.

150k miles is what i had on my 4.6 ...had a nasty lifter tap and my trans locked up in reverse

Offer him 6 G's for it and tell him you need a tune up , clutch kit and oil change so that should be a good deal. I believe these engines are duty rated at 220k correct me if im wrong , so there very reliable and compared to other cars there not that bad to fix (pocket wise).
