Default Going from 28 to 31 spline rear end... pics!

Thought I would share some pics of the install on an 04 gt that me and my friend did. We took the car from 28 spline (stock) to a 31 spline cobra diff (with the carbon clutches) and moser 31 spline axles. We also did all new bearings, races and seals. Its a lot of work but def worth it in the end. Here are some of the pics. Also added in a pic of my car on the lift (mine is the s197, I was changing the oil and fixing the shifter) We set it to 9.5 backlash and used a .30 shim on the pinion (if I remember right). I will try to find some pics of the axles, but man are those things massive.

the blue on the gear is from the grease we used to check the depth of the gears.

How long did it take you guys? Looks like the lift helped speed the swap up. I always hear gears are one thing to take into a shop and let them do it. Did you guy find it pretty difficult?

Well we did gears on my s197 in his garage before he got his shop and it took about 4-5 hours because we ran into some issues.

To do the diff and everything took a while (about a weekend) because you need to get everything right. Its really not that hard to do it just takes a while to press everything in and get all the settings right. You can also usually guarantee that something will go wrong. We broke an ABS exciter ring but it was only 13 dollars for a new one.

Most shops just throw them in but they dont check backlash, pinion depth and they might not preload the bearing right. We used the way ford does it and we measured the old pinion gear with a digital micrometer and then measured the new one and added shims to make it the same depth. Then we used grease and spun them and saw where they lined up. I think we took it back apart to adjust everything about 3 or 4 times and then we did it with the real bearing, crush washer and pinion nut after that. We use a old bearing that we cut out the middle so you dont have to press it on so we can check everything first.

On my s197 i have put 25k miles though it and never had a problem or any whine. Its all about how you get it set. Once he opens the shop he is going to do a special for either 450 or 500 for a whole gear swap (for parts and labor you just bring your car in) and he will stock the gears so no parts need to be ordered.

Took the car out for a spin... spun the tires in 2nd, chirped third and 4th gears

Now I get to drive this car more often since my brother in law bought a 2010 gt. So he is storing this car at my house.

Its def a good mod and we got a LOT of the driveline slop out and now we can really beat on it.

The stock axles had some wear on the splines as well.
