spark plug gap?

Smile gapped too wide?

i gapped the plugs at .054,and i just ckecked my mpg,im only getting 18mpg highway?60mph,2000rpms,my old plugs were set at .045,should i gap the new plugs at .045?do you think that is why they were gapped at .045?
