Default used cams

Well basically weh i got my motor built i didnt have the 4.10s so i was told to only go with the stage one cams because i didnt have the steeper gears to keep it from bogging. well now i really want stage II's but dont have 500 to just throw out there lol. So i was wondering has anyone ever seen used cams floatin around anywhere? And would they be safe to use? And one more question... Do i need to get new springs or anything to put the stage IIs in. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Greg

Jw, why didn't you spring to get the 4.10s if you wanted stage 2 cams in the first place?

you need to replace valve springs with stage 2 cams (another ~$250-300)

To be honest i would never buy used cams. That's just my opinion! If you must, i see them all the time on craigslist, ebay, etc.

This is a situation where you need to clearly define what you from your car. If you really want stage 2 type cams you really should consider more aggressive gearing.

As far as aftermarket springs it's always a good idea, but not always totally necessary. A lot of what determines this is the lift and how far you will be revving it. Most stage 2's need to rev higher to make greater numbers, which would definantly require new springs.

+1. There is few things I WONT buy used. Engine Internals/cams/gears are some of them.

I've bought two sets of pi cams (one set came with the heads) used and had them tested and they were fine. My whole pi set up was used too. I did end up buying new lash adjusters all around though. Just be careful, get lots of pictures and try to get a local pick up so you can inspect them right there and then.

Roller cams that were installed correctly and not abused will last 100K miles easy. Nothing wrong with a used roller cam. Any cam you install will be used in just a few minutes. Even after 50K miles you wouldn't consider replacing it, would you?

Its a long story but basically i didnt know that i needed steeper gears. Ive had the gears for over a year so i had them before i had the motor built. He told me when like future mods i should do that the dyno guy suggested and 4.10s were on the list. And i said well i have them just not installed. And than he said if i wouldve had them in he wouldve put the stage IIs in needless to say i was now wanting the stage IIs. And im only 18 so its not like i had the 3000 for the motor and another 500 to drop on gears and the intall. haha so now im just waiting to save up my money so i can get the stage IIs.
