The more displacement, you need more air and bigger valves otherwise you will get valve shroud?
It's not exactly the heads fault, you can only do so much with the bore of the cylinder.

They can make decent n/a power... but in comparison to others its not very good. Sxyned is right, you need to run race ported 3v heads and cams and high compression to hope to make higher hp n/a. I have seen one 5.4 4v make in the mid 500s, it was a dual carb conversion 4v 5.4 and im not sure the compression but im sure it was at least 13+ (a race gas motor)
+1 (Although I don't want to start another 3v vs. 4v debate, if the right cams are used with the the right ported heads, I do agree that a 3v head could be able to produces more power with less valvetrain drag.)

I don't think there is much in the way of true research/development for cams design, 3v's and big bore with higher compression for anything modular to be really effective for high numbers NA. At least not available for the common owner.

When I first started in this game I asked my tuner what to do to make power. He said, "Add boost", then I did and asked him how to add more power, he said, "Build your engine and add more boost" and if I asked him tomorrow how to add more power, he'd say, "Add more boost"

I'm quite sure anyone with modular tuning & building experience would say the same thing. IDK why so many people think it's so important "To Be Different". Power is power, If you want to be different, paint your car pink and purple.

If you want to be different and make loads of power out of the box, go SB/BB Ford or LSx GM.

So lets get the compression up, I can do that with a set of Forged Pistons and .020 bore, and deck mill,on the trcikflow heads(their heads make more Piston To Valve Clearance as well)

Since its not my dd, race gas will not be expensive.

Do I need to forge the rods and crank even though its not being supercharged?

But what happens when you choose to be different and make impressive numbers on an N/A setup. I mean i can see at least those numbers or better with what he has planned. I mean with the 5.4, the intake is gonna be different than the PI designed manifolds so with the TFS heads, crower stage 3 cams, and edelbrock intake manifold, i can see this motor making 340rwhp or better with that compression and around 380rwtq. And to answer the OP's question, you will want to forge the bottom end because the stock bottom end will not handle that compression, that power, and any kind of boost at all. And you will most definitely want better rotating assembly to handle the RPM's you will have to spin that thing to get the power out of it that you are going to be capable of. And really good bearing too. You may also want to talk to MMR about their ported TFS heads. They may be worth it to you. Something to think about.

I think your CD player is stuck on repeat.

While that is also true, it was just a typo... I meant to say 4v. , but sometimes you just have to let the internet be the internet.

If he wants to stay N/A, let him stay N/A. The only thing done differently on an N/A motor than a boosted motor is compression and cams. If youre going all out for power either way, you need a build shortblock with ported heads and cams so if he wants to go all out for N/A and he finds out he still wants more, than all he has to do is get a different set of pistons for lower compression and then he can throw as much boost as he wants to through it and switch cams. Then add the fuel to support it but its not that much different. So if he wants to run N/A, then let him do it. Its not that hard to swap to F/I in the future. Same components for the most part. Only minor swaps.

no its not hard, just new internals, re-machining, new cams, new intake, new fuel system and flush all that money spent down the toilet.

Do we REALLY..have to debate this NA vs FI **** again?

OP, IMO i'd get some C heads and some custom cround cams and High comp pistons. with I beams rods, a cast crank ( less weight = faster reving),a short runner intake and big bore. you'd be well into the 400rwhp's if you set it up right.

I must say I agree Sxynerd when he said power is power. To the OP if your not going to DD this car then I dont understand your reason for building a 2v 5.4. To me it just doesnt make sense. Especially for the money you will have in it to build the engine to handle higher HP. Do people really forget how much our engines love boost??? If I was in your shoes and was about to undergo this same build I would build a forged engine to run on SPRAY. Still wish I would have done that instead of going procharger. But centri superchargers are amazing.

I looked at the cost of forging and high compression.

Hmmm, good stuff, Its tempting to just forge and slap on a Whipple or something. Hell, Kenne Bell has DECENT kits t and keep the power CONSISTENT, AND MAN DOES THAT GRAPH LOOK SICK!

Im very new on blowers, Im looking for something that is going to last me and take the abuse, something parts will always be available for the next 5 years for it and a reputable company, with good warranty and customer service. I dont want a crappy powerdyne either or some model that will be discontinued soon
