Well I am more than happy with 17's and they give you the instant gratification and they are cheaper for the wheels and the tires both. So if you want your car to look better and you dont have the money to spend on 18's, then 17's will do the job perfectly and give you the instant gratification on less coin. Now if you really want 18's and there is no other choice than that, then i would not buy 17's because you wont be happy, even though you spent less money. So if 18's are the end all be all, then thats what you save for and buy. But if you are happy with either 18's or 17's, 17's will be cheaper and do the same job that 18's will do which is improve the look of your car over stock. So you can do it on a budget and would be happy with 17's, then why not??? But if you wouldnt be happy with 17's then dont do it. And i mean if people are like you, they will switch wheels plenty of times before finding one that they stick with. So if they try 17's and they dont like them, next set=18's

Some people bitch about the cost of 18" tires... but I guess it depends on what you're doing with the car... If the 18" are just your street tire, they really aren't that bad in price, but they look 100x better.

I currently have DD bullitts with a 295/35/18 in the rear... no quad shock so I don't know if that would have rubbed but nothing else done.

They will still look good. What size/brand tire are you going to be running?
