sounds like a miss...weird that its only certain gears, but first step would be to inspect your plugs/cops...make sure the intake isnt dumping coolant into the plug wells or oil from a valve cover gasket... bad COP or bad plugs could cause a miss under load

if the engine is stuttering under load, it doesnt sound like a trans or diff problem....if the trans or diff were acting up, you would get a whining sound and/or grinding

my 2v used to be intermittent missing like youre describing...not sure what caused it since by the time i got around to fixing it, i was running on 5 cylinders lol.... #5 was full of coolant, 7 shot out, and 8 was filled with oil

i guess i dont understand what you mean by "catches" and lets go... are you saying if you floor it in 5th or 3rd the rpms go up but the car doesnt pick up for a second? like the engine is going but its not hooking up with the trans? if thats the case, it sound like your clutch is on its way out...does it slip in 4th also?

if im still not getting it, you need to work on describing it better lol...what do you mean by "it feels like it catches then lets go"

like bogging from a stop light when you have not enough throttle and too much clutch?

does it do it in 4th also or just 3 and 5?
if 4th is fine, then i really have no clue...sorry man...seems like the clutch is slipping, but it wouldnt do it in 3rd and 5th and not 4th...

goodluck either way, maybe somebody else can chime in
