Default 99 speedo help

Ok, I have a 99 gt, 5 speed with a tremec tko tranny. Speedo is off, I mean way off, says 40 doing 80 kinda off. Checked the gear into the tranny from the speed sensor and had some teeth broke. Replaced it, no change. Just bought a hypertech tuner, set everything up and went to adjust the speedo with tire and gear change...nothing. Set the tuner to 30 inch tires and 4.56 gears, maxed out on the programmer, still no change.

Question is, do you think the problem is in the speed sensor itself, or maybe something in the gauges? Any help, advise is greatly appreciated.

30" TIRES!?!?!?!?!

I think you did something wrong here. Look up your tires and find the overall diameter (looking at nearer to 25.6" for OEM). There is a calculator link in Choosing a new tire thread and may be of some help.

have you tampered with the gauges themselves at all? as in, have you installed a gauge face overlay, or the like?

i just looked up the tire size on this website, and you're right. according to them, a 245/45ZR17 tire is 25.7" tall.

Tires are 275 40 17's. Geared at 3.73. That wasn't the point. The point I was tring to make is that no size/gear incriment changes have any effect. Also, I have factory gauges, no overlays, although they are ordered.....

Ok set all the specs on the tires and gear to correct spec...nothing. Just replaced the speed sensor....no change. Am I at the point of tearing into the gauge cluster itself, or replacing the cluster, or is there anything I'm not thinking of?

It's probably the cluster, but here's the easiest way to tell:

Before you turn the key on, hold the odometer reset button, while holding it, start the car.

Keep holding it till the gauges sweep. You can let go then, push the odometer reset button a few times till you get to ENG 000.0

ENG (don't know why they chose that) is speed in MPH. Go drive around and watch the digital readout. If it's correct, but the needle is wrong, it's just your cluster. If the digital readout is wrong, there's something wrong with a sensor, or in your tune.

There's also some other cool stuff to watch in that cluster diag mode. Also, watch the speedo during the sweep, see if it actually makes full sweep like it's supposed to.

To clear the diag mode, turn the car off and on again, or just hold the odometer reset button till it returns to normal.
