Default Automatic Overdrive Issue

Hey guys.

I own a 2004 gt with about 35k miles on it. Mods in sig. On the way from Tampa to Orlando I believe Overdrive went out. I can cruise with overdrive off with no issues, no tranny slippage at all, but as soon as I hit the overdrive button on the shifter the rpm's rev up and OD does not engage.

Any ideas on what it may be. Never had any problems with the car and hate to take it to the ford dealership with the diablo tune installed. This is the same tune I have had on the car for years and have never had a problem.

Any suggestions? Ideas? I called ford but of course they want me to bring it in. I do have the Ford ESP platinum plan but would just as soon check it out if it may be as easy a fix as a fuse or something.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Pushing in the button turns the overdrive off, there should be an OD/OFF indicator on the instrument cluster with the button pressed--sounds like it's working the way it's supposed to?

from the 2004 owner's manual

Sorry i can't help with your problem but i've always wondered. When launching hard from a standstill should i keep o/d on? I always leave it on and rarely ever turn it off but i've read somewhere when doing a hard launch keep it off then engage it as your speed climbs.

x2 on checking the light. I had a 95 T-Bird that my OD light burned out and it seemed like the tranny was having a problem at first. I just had to figure out when it was on or off by going over 40 and hitting the button.

OD is always on unless you push the button, which turns it off.

In laymans terms. If Overdrive is ON the rpms Race to redline and the car doesn't go anywhere. If it's not on the car runs fine except for the fact it's running at high rpm's.

If I turn the overdrive ON then it's like the car is in neutral even at say 70 mph it just revs and revs and doesn't go till I turn overdrive OFF and then I'm fine.

Hope that clarifies things. I have an appt with the stealership monday. Thank god for the ESP plan.

Maybe a problem with the OD bands, hopefully they can clarify.

Much more clear description, you do have a problem--could be something simple (debris in the valve body, overdrive servo, or an electrical problem).

Have you checked the fluid level/condition?

------------------------------------------
Oh, you might want to consider flashing the stock tune and "un-marrying" your tuner. Dealers have a nasty habit of "upgrading" the tune to the latest version when problems like this occur, and sometimes when under factory warranty every time the work on the car if a newer version is available.

If this is done they will find that you have an after market tune loaded which would give the ESP adjuster a chance to start a pissing match.

Also, if they load a new tune you probably will not be able to divorce the tuner from your car, and not be able to load the Diablo back in tune either.

The guy I spoke with told me to ask for him, he said as long as the car doesn't look like it's had the **** run out of it, ie bald tires, crap condition ect it would be a problem. My car has never really been abused per say, it's always in clean looking condition and doesn't have bald tires. I'll be sure to mention to him not to have them update the sofware.

Fluid level is fine, I have never had any leaks whatsoever with this car. No oil leaks, no tranny drips, ect.

update:

The dealership said the overdrive clutch is out and second gear is slipping so it's not a simple electrical issue .

The service rep wants me to bring my tuner over today so they can pull the tune off the car before they start the work.

I hope all goes well. I sure as hell cannot afford to pay for a new transmission.
