can depend on your track. best thing to do is call your local tracks or go to their website and they will tell you what is required for certain events/times.
for instance one of the motorcycle tracks here only requires a DOT approved full face helmet (walmart sells a helmet that meets this requirement for 60 bucks). other tracks require atleast a snell certification. reason for this is DOT approves some really crappy helmets. to be DOT approved, it doesn't have to meet very high crash safety standards, infact a bicycle helmet with plastic around it will pass a DOT test.
if your curious about the different ratings as far as safety goes you can google up snell vs DOT ratings.
