In the 2004 model year yes...because they have all the TSB's worked out on them. Or in built form. But I'd rather have me a 6 speed for the extra gear between 4th and OD.

^What he said. **EDIT.... Dammit, Teej snuck one in there on me; I was referring to sxynerd's comment....... They just have their quirks, and ultimately aren't designed for the abuse of racing. Not sure what the T-45 is rated, but the 3650 is only rated for like 365 ft. lbs. of torque (hence the 3650 designation I suppose) which makes it pretty much maxed out with just some bolt-ons.

when this happened to me last season i blew my trans shortly after...it sounds like you are literally describing my exact problem...i too have bolt ons and a steeda triax sts...but besides that coincidence id say ur gonna blow ur trans...after 3 passes of not being able to get into third i left pissed, then within 2 weeks ended up having 3rd disappear completely while i was cruising in town...then i lost 4th as well..fun driving to the trans shop without 3rd or 4th..lol...good luck buddy but id say be aware of the fact ur trans is prolly gonna go...assuming ur problem is the same as mine, which it sounds identical

Wow, well that just sounds fantastic. Thanks for the info though.
How much is it to get a 6spd transmission including the install??

If you buy new, it's like $4,000 including install. If you decide to go that route, it's much better to shop around for a used t-56 and just piece a kit together.

If you search craigslist there is almost always a few on there. You might need to find the right bell housing depending on what it came out of and all that. But it would be much more feasible to find a decent used trans

Why is there so much misconception?

Is it alot easier/cheaper to engineer automatics to hold power? Sure seems so with the ridiculous amount of power the 4r70w can handle with just a transmission cooler.

How well does a stock 4r70w hold with a decent stall converter, a shift kit and an engine pushing any considerable amount of power?

His point is that they are in fact good transmissions. They might not stand the abuse that a lot of guys put them through, that doesn't mean they are crappy transmissions though.
