Default T56 swap worth the work?

I found what seems to me a great deal on a 04 Cobra T56 transmission, and all the donor parts for $1,000.00. I eventually wanted to install a 6 speed into my car, its function is a street/open track car. I was planning on putting in a Viper spec T56 but this deal seems to good to pass up. What do you guys think, should I get the Cobra T56 and call it good or hold on to the money and get a Viper spec T56 later on down the road? The other question would be is the T56 swap worth it or should I hang onto my bills and put the money elsewhere?

What would the 6 speed do that your current trans cannot do?

The 6th gear overdrive ratio of the terminator t56 isn't much different than that of the 5 speeds. I don't know if its possible to just replace the 6th gear unit with a smaller ratio...

If gas mileage is a concern, do you think that dropping a grand now would really make that much of a difference in mpg's? How about with the viper spec t56?

It should be a solid trans if you wanted it because it can hold more power than the t45/tr3650.

I am not really looking to get a better MPG so that is not where i am concerned. I like the idea of the T56 being a bit stronger and the closer ratios for the track. I am also looking at it as I will just have another gear to choose from when running around and not have to worry about the gaps as in the standard 5 speed.

not worth it for your reasons. "closer ratios" means more shifting, means slower times.

The only way a t56 will be put in my car is if its a viper spec. The taller 6th gear ratio is the only thing worth the price. IMO of course. I think ppl want a t56 swap more than anything because they just want a cobra part lol.

im putting one in along with my rebuilt motor next weekend. And the biggest reason besides the fact that i want to tell everyone i have a 6 speed lol is that the close ratio 1-4 is going to be much better at keeping the car in the power band, and with a set or rear gears (3.90s in my case) i can maintain factory rpm at highway speed with the 6th gear. The viper spec you lose the close ratio, you get a taller first gear, steep 6th, which means with 4.10s and 70mph your only at like 1500rpm its a gas mileage gear. you do get added strength though, which can mostly be solved in a regular t-56 by doing a 26 spline upgrade. And lastly to 99gtvert you can add just a steeper 6th gear, its jut expensive, mainly because you have to pay someone to practically rebuild the whole tranny just to put it in.

i disagree, more shifting is a downfall of haveing gears, i went with factory gears 1-3 in the quarter, then i got the 3.90s and now i have to shift 1-4. When i make the swap, ill still be 1-4 only the engine rpm will drop right on to my peak torque around 4200 every shift instead of dropping under it like the t-45

I dont like the viper spec personally just because 1st-3rd are kinda oddly rationed. I much prefer the new T56 magnum that you have the 1st-4th of an 03 cobra and then you get the 5th and 6th of the GT500/Viper. Its the best of both worlds and your gearing wont be messed up either.

You think you got it bad...try a 3.38 1st gear ratio with a 4.10 gear. lol but the cobra tranny is a decent tranny and i'd be willing to swap one into my car.

Some of you pepes need to do more research on the T-56

Tis true, that with the exception of a couple models, the top gear is nearly identical in ratio to that of your current T-45,T-3650 or T-5 trans. The HUGE upside I found was the even gaps between gears of my #1260 from that of my previous 5 speed transmissions.

Pepe my swap thread and will find out all you need to know and benifits that may be gained.
