I recently purchased a 98 gt. I bought car under impression it needed a transmission. When i got the car it would only go into 1st and 2nd. After swapping shifter from another mustang i now have 1,2,3,&4 but grinds going into 5th and wont go into reverse. Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be before i pull the tranny?

 

You swapped your stock shifter for a short-throw shifter or stock shifter? Still, I don't see why that would make a difference.

Does your issue occur at all times? If it grinds going into 5th BUT goes in, then I don't think it;s major problems, assuming it engages and the car is hwy drivable.

 

that doesnt sound right. means somthing wasnt working right to begin with, like internal linkage or somthing. The only reason i can think that it would better with a diff shifter would be maybe because the last shifter was broken or loose. if it doesnt work out you can buy my t-45!!! and stock shifter!!! lol

 

Yes this occurs all the time. It won't actually go into 5th but grinds like it wants too & it won't even budge into reverse.

 

I swapped shifters thinking that was the problem.

 

then i'd say bman got your solution.

I'd saay get the 3650 though. or the t56 if u can find a cheap one.
