Changing gear oil

Changing gear oil
I have changed my transmission fluid before, and I am wondering if the REAR END gear oil is a similar process (top fill plug, lower drain plug) I know you obviously can't fill the rear end gear oil through the inside of the car like you can with the transmission fluid.. lol
Anyways, how many quarts do we need of 75W 90? I have heard mixed things... Are there any special procautions to take when doing this change? I have a 2000 GT by the way, so I have the T45.

There is no drain plug on the rear-end, you have to remove the cover to drain the oil. There is a fill plug on the front left of the housing.
For your 2000 the recommended fill/oil is 3.75pts of Motorcraft 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant (which is probably no longer available), plus 4oz of friction modifier.
FWIW--the 2001+ specs call for 4.25pts of Motorcraft 75W-140 Synthetic Rear Axle Lubricant, plus 4 oz of friction modifier.
However as the axles are identical what this really means is that somewhere between 3¾ and 4¼ pints, of 75W-90 or 75W-140, dino or synthetic oil, with 4oz of friction modifier, will be OK (in my opinion).
But wait there's more! With some synthetic gear oils you may not need the friction modifier--check with the oil's manufacturer to find out for sure.

you can always syphon the oil out of there without removing the diff cover. i know i did. and as long as you don't go with synthetic oil, you will need friction modifier. i wouldn't recommend synthetic anyway, since the manufacturer spec. doesn't call for it
