Default Requesting some new Tire Suggestions

I have an 01 GT and have stock 17X9 rims on the car. I would like some wider tires for the car as the ones on it look too plain. I have 245-45 ZR17's on it now. I would like to go wider but keep the stock rims on the car. Just checking to see if anyone has any suggestions? Thanks,Bob

Stock rim are actually 17x8 but you really do not want to go any bigger on the stock tires. Anything larger than that and the sidewalls will become stressed.

Basically don't do this.

AmericanMuscle.com has great prices on good rims and then you can wrap them in 275's and 315's and enjoy.

You could likely get away with a 265....but no wider.

Yup... 245's are max on an 8" wheel and 275's max on 9" wheel (at least in the profiles within the mix here)

PS. See Choosing a new tire (sig) and gets into tire fitment do's/dont's and why

Any pictures ?
Just wondering myself how bad they would budge on stock ( I guess they call them starfish rims ?,Stock 99 GT wheels)

Like to use my stocks for drag racing with 275\40\17 street tires.
reason don't want to break anything with D\R where my control arms aren't upgraded yet (stockers)
Plus not use my heavy 96 Chrome Cobra R rims at track.

I picked up a set of 245/45/17 Toyo Proxes 4's. They seem to ride real nice. I haven't "pushed them". Partly because I don't normally drive that hard. Only reason I got them was because I got a good deal on them from Town Fair Tire.

Go there and ask what they have for used sets. They give you 30 days to drive on the tires and see how they are. If you don't like them you can get diff ones. They then sell the ones you returnd but for a discounted price since they are no longer "new". Got my Toyo's for $92 a tire I believe. When it's all said and done Town Fair is (I found) cheapest. If you buy online, then you need them shipped then mounted and balanced which, when I shopped around, was more expensive then buying from them.

Thanks for all the responses. My 01 GT came with the painted 5 spoke rims from the factory. Back in 05 I bought the polished version from the local Ford dealer over the counter. I thought they were 17X9 so I need to confirm this before i buy some new rubber.

I like my nitto nt555's, no problems with them at all, they seem pretty good for daily driving. Probably not the best tires ever for track riding or amazing launches but they are good for what they are. The best looking and mabe preforming street tires though are eagle f1's but they are expensive. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....Eagle+F1+GS-D3 might be worth it if you are going for looks and performance on the street. I hear they are some of the best tires in the rain also.

and i wouldnt go over a 245 on the stock 8 inch rims, 255 would probably be ok but they are more expensive and you will not get any performance upgrade, mabe even a performance downgrade due to stressed sidewalls. Save up and get some black saleen wheels that are wider than stock and put some fat tires on them if you really want to go wider. You can probably get some of your money back you spent on the new rims if you sell your old rims if they are in good condition.
