In this order:
  1. Mid-pipe (H or X, your choice);
  2. Tuner (hand held or PC based);
  3. Rear-end gears (3.73:1 and 4.10:1 are most common);
  4. TB (70mm) and upper plenum (any of the after market units);
  5. Other stuff like UDPs, aluminum driveshaft, etc.;

What not to waste money on:
  • CAI (the OEM intake is a CAI, and a pretty good one);
  • COPs (see the COP "sticky");
  • Fancy (multiple electrode, etc.) or "copper" spark plugs (the OEM platinum plugs are fine);
  • Things that add weight, but don't increase performance (body kits, annoying "thump, thump, thump" audio systems, 18" or larger wheels, etc,;

For a "few thousand" I would do gears, tune, midpipe and sticky tires. All the other things like UDPs or TB/Plenum I would pass on because IMO not really worth it. Money can be spent elsewhere and have better results.
