Default my roommate needs my help w/ his v6 (differential question)

Its me AGAIN.

So my roommate has a 2004 v6 mustang. He had it up at the shop the other day to check up on his differential (it had a small leak). The mechanic said that he took the cover off and that there were metal shavings mixed in with the oil. He said actually that it was worst diff. he has ever seen. He said that it will go out any day. I am thinking at this point he is talking about the actual gears, but I was not able to look. He cleaned the differential and sealed it, and now 3 weeks later the car makes an annoying squeaking noise on deceleration. It honestly sound like my old school bus. Just makes that "humm" noise. What do you guys think? It is getting progressively worse.

How should we go about diagnosing what the problem is to fix? Thanks for your help.

New diff and gears. At this point everything in the rear is probably so shot it's not worth it to try to reuse any of it. So get the master gear install kit and a new diff and gears and just do that. Metal shavings+diff clutches and gears=bad news bears. Sorry to hear about this though.

Sorry to hear about your roomates Stang Matt! As if it weren't tough enough to deal with his roomate putting a cam and a T trim on his V8, now the poor kids rear diff sh*ts the bed? Damn.....

I was thinking gears too... is it possible he could get away with just changing those or you think that the entire unit is shot? What is inside the diff other then the gears? (that will go bad?)

Well the metal shavings could have worked themselves in between the clutches in the diff and ruined those. Ruined the seals and stuff too maybe.

may be cheaper to find a used rear end. might want to upgrade to a 8.8 while he's at it
