Default 4r70w transmission problems

Hey i have a 2001 automatic mustang gt...recently the only gears that work on my car are 1st and 2nd...when it comes time for 3rd to go in it doesnt and the engine just revs and doesnt go anywhere?
is it time to rebuild the whole tranny? Or might there be another problem with it so i wont have to pay 2k for the rebuild.? Also do you guys recommend a shift kit so it can perform better?

yeah looks like it's about time for a rebuild my friend. rebuild kits are around 500 bucks, if you can find someone you trust to do it on the side you could save yourself a lot of money versus taking it somewhere.

Also, a shift kit is a good way to get a little more outta the auto. imo go transgo hd 2 for that, and if you get tht you're also gonna wanna get a trans cooler which are relatively cheap, around 60 bucks, 80 bucks for the trans go shift kit. and if you really wanna make it seem like a different car throw a nice stall in it as well.

Super common issue...especially in cop cars. The clutch packs are probably fused together... or the band is burnt out. Either way, its gotta come apart and get rebuilt.

i have 3 mustangs and 1 is a 1998 gt auto my car revs up to about 3000r's before grabbing the gear and hits the gear hard in all gears. at 60mph if i pin the pedal it revs the 3000 grabs the gear and smokes the tires wierd

Idk about a 4r70 but with the c4 that means time for a band readjustment. Basically the band is too loose. And the drum is spinning faster and the band grabs and that's where you get your boom and it goes.
