Speedo INOP

Just traded my 95 GMC Z71 for a 96 Cobra. The speedo is inop and was wondering if i could get some ideas on what to look at first. If it didnt work at all i would have a better idea but i have never seen one go backwards. Any idea??? Thanks

VSS (vehicle speed sensor) at the transmission is where I'd start.
