Wait what? you want to tow 4700lbs with your mustang? Honestly, the ranger would struggle with that. A friend of mine has a powerstroke f250 he uses to tow his 23' outlaw that weights roughly 5500lbs and it makes his truck squat.

I say do it and post the pics. What could it cost a few hundred bucks to try right? How much does he want for the Ranger. It's gotta be alot more than the price of trying a hitch on your car. If it doesn't work you can sell the tow hitch on ebay or something. And we'll all have the pics to look back on and get a few laughs.
Worst thing that could happen is you end up in the water on a dock...so never try to load it or grab it from the water. Use your buddies cherokee for water stuff.
Are there alot of hills where you live?
Buy Jet ski's instead

I mean all towing capacity really is is the ability to get the thing rolling. That only becomes a major factor when going up inclines. And the strain it puts on the car going down steep inclines. If you don't have alot of that to worry about why not try it. However, never try to put it in the water. I'd hate to see your Mustang take a swim.
If it does go swimming though, take pics of that too

Straight out of the owner's manual.
"TRAILER TOWING
Your vehicle is capable of towing a trailer up to 454
kg (1 000 lbs.) gross trailer weight with a maximum
tongue load of 45 kg (100 lbs.). Do not tow a trailer
until your vehicle has been driven at least 800 km
(500 miles).
Towing a trailer places an additional load on your
vehicle’s engine, transmission, axles, brakes, tires
and suspension. Inspect these components carefully
after towing.
Do not exceed the GVWR or the GAWR
specified on the certification label.
Towing trailers beyond the maximum
recommended gross trailer weight could
result in engine damage, transmission/axle damage,
structural damage, loss of control, and personal
injury."
