Default 2001 GT Brake Upgrade?

Pardon me if this has already been answered 500 times, but I did try to search to find my answer and could not. I want to upgrade the brakes on my 2001 GT Convertible to either the Bullitt or Cobra set up. Some of these part suppliers make kits, but I am not willing to spend $1400.00. I was wanting to go buy some rebuilt calipers from my local parts store, use the red caliper paint, upgrade the rotors to drilled and slotted and possibly stainless hoses. Does anybody have any advice about what works best? Are there simple bolt-on solutions using rebuilt parts? My car is in awesome shape for a 2001, but I cannot afford some of the prices of these brake upgrades. Thanks!

No need to spend $1,400 my friend. I think I spent less than $350 on my 03 cobra front brake upgrade, brand new from BFR.com. Which included calipers, rotors, pads and SS lines.

Yeah, you're looking more around 400 to do that, not 1400. FYI, the cobra brakes and bullitt brakes are the same. Don't buy drilled rotors. Goodluck.

Thanks for the advice on the rotors. What issues have you had with drilled rotors? Warpage?

Why drilled rotors suck 101.

You may want to look in to installing a set of ceramic pads.

A couple months after I got my '03 I burned up the OEM pads and rotors when I had to lose 55mph real fast on I-10 just West of Lake City, FL (it was the 55mph between 125 and 70). I was buzzing along having a great time when the "threat detector" sounded off. I stomped on the pedal, the cabin filled with smoke and stink, and I bet the rotors were glowing cherry red when I passed by the FHP cruiser parked on the side of the road.

As it had to be fixed "now", I got a set of v-slotted rotors and EBC Redstuff ceramic pads--planning on upgrading to the larger brakes when the bank account allowed.

Turns out it has not been necessary, and I have made a number of similar slowdowns and stops since then...

Prone to cracks and a lack of practicality. Street/strip applications only need blanks.

Depends on the rotor and it's use. If you get crappy ones, they'll crack. If you don't break them in right, they'll crack.

If you get good quality drilled rotors, break them in correctly (which most forget to do) then you'll be fine. I've had drilled rotors on all my Mustang projects but the '98. NEVER had failure... street or hard track use. Everytime I've seen issues, it was from improper use.

Sorry... it was an abbreviation.... THIS is where I bought mine, but it appears they don't offer the one stop shop anymore.

I appreciate all of the advice. Any suggestions on which calipers I should use? Should I go to the local parts store and just get some rebuilt Cobra calipers? Will they bolt up to my spindle?
